The Hidden Blessing in Tests and Difficulties - Selections from the Writings of Worlds Religions

God loves to afflict his chosen servants in order to perfect their virtues and to raise their rank with Him. This is neither a flaw for them nor a punishment.
Imam al-Munawi

from 'Fayd al-Qadir'

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Jesus Christ
from 'The Gospel of Matthew'

[The servant's] moral rectification is through the companionship of the people of realization – and through reading their books if one was unable to find them -, to learn about their reports and merits, coupled with perpetual contemplation and reflection, increased worship, humility, and neediness, and latching on to debasement and sincere absolute remorse. God said in some reports [of Prophet Muhammad's words], ‘I am with those whose hearts are broken for My sake.’
Shaykh Ahmad ibn Ajiba
18th Century Sufi Saint
from 'The Immense Ocean'

O Son of Man! If adversity befall thee not in My path, how canst thou walk in the ways of them that are content with My pleasure? If trials afflict thee not in thy longing to meet Me, how wilt thou attain the light in thy love for My beauty?
Bahá’u’lláh
Prophet-Founder of the Bahá'í Faith
from 'The Hidden Words' (Arabic)

The more difficulties one sees in the world the more perfect one becomes. The more you plough and dig the ground the more fertile it becomes. The more you cut the branches of a tree the higher and stronger it grows. The more you put the gold in the fire the purer it becomes. The more you sharpen the steel by grinding the better it cuts. Therefore, the more sorrows one sees the more perfect one becomes. That is why, in all times, the Prophets of God have had tribulations and difficulties to withstand. The more often the captain of a ship is in the tempest and difficult sailing the greater his knowledge becomes. Therefore I am happy that you have had great tribulations and difficulties. For this I am very happy -- that you have had many sorrows. Strange it is that I love you and still I am happy that you have sorrows.
'Abdu'l-Bahá
Center of the Covenant of Bahá'u'lláh and Exemplar of His Teachings
from 'Star of the West', Vol. 14

In the Quran the All-Merciful says,
You shall certainly be tried and tested in your wealth and properties and in your personal selves, and you shall certainly hear much that will grieve you from those who received the Scripture before you and from those who ascribe partners to God, but if you persevere patiently, and have Taqwa (mindfulness, piety, spiritual consciousness) then verily, that will be a determining factor in all affairs, and that is from the great matters, [which you must hold on with all your efforts].

and

Verily, We shall put you to test with some fear, and hunger, and with some loss of wealth, lives, and offspring. And (O Muhammad) convey good tidings to those who are patient, who say, when inflicted by hardship, "Verily we are of God and verily to Him shall we return;" upon them is the blessings of God and His mercy.
...
Let not, however, thy soul grieve over that which God hath rained down upon Us. Merge thy will in His pleasure, for We have, at no time, desired anything whatsoever except His Will, and have welcomed each one of His irrevocable decrees. Let thine heart be patient, and be thou not dismayed. Follow not in the way of them that are sorely agitated.
Bahá’u’lláh
from 'Gleanings'

Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.
Saint Peter
from 'the First Epistle of Peter'

With firm determination, with the whole affection of your heart, and with the full force of your words, turn ye unto Him, and walk not in the ways of the foolish. The world is but a show, vain and empty, a mere nothing, bearing the semblance of reality. Set not your affections upon it. Break not the bond that uniteth you with your Creator, and be not of those that have erred and strayed from His ways. Verily I say, the world is like the vapor in a desert, which the thirsty dreameth to be water and striveth after it with all his might, until when he cometh unto it, he findeth it to be mere illusion. It may, moreover, be likened unto the lifeless image of the beloved whom the lover hath sought and found, in the end, after long search and to his utmost regret, to be such as cannot “fatten nor appease his hunger.”

O My servants! Sorrow not if, in these days and on this earthly plane, things contrary to your wishes have been ordained and manifested by God, for days of blissful joy, of heavenly delight, are assuredly in store for you. Worlds, holy and spiritually glorious, will be unveiled to your eyes. You are destined by Him, in this world and hereafter, to partake of their benefits, to share in their joys, and to obtain a portion of their sustaining grace. To each and every one of them you will, no doubt, attain.
Bahá’u’lláh

Weekly Meditation #8

"The fruits of the tree of man have ever been and are goodly deeds and a praiseworthy character. Withhold not these fruits from the heedless. If they be accepted, your end is attained, and the purpose of life achieved. If not, leave them in their pastime of vain disputes. Strive, O people of God, that haply the hearts of the divers kindreds of the earth may, through the waters of your forbearance and loving-kindness, be cleansed and sanctified from animosity and hatred, and be made worthy and befitting recipients of the splendors of the Sun of Truth.” ~Baha'u'llah

Weekly Meditation #7

Life is Not a Philosophy
Life is not in a philosophy or theology, nor is it any type of thought or idea. Life is a continual happening of the now. It is always renewing and only truly happening in this moment. None of these words are imparting dogmas or belief, there is no philosophy here. There is real value only in words--that when spoken--were genuine reflections of truth in that moment. Understanding this fact allows one to see what is truly real and live fully in the present moment.

Weekly Meditation #6

Supreme Virtue of Playfulness
Seriousness freezes the natural compassion of the heart and halts all spiritual progress. Thoughts of love naturally develop a dispensation toward loving and compassionate action and away from judgment and an overly serious attitude. Playfulness is the mother of all virtues.

Truth is Beyond Belief
The mind can never create a picture that will encompass the whole of reality. No dogma can hold the truth. No creed can express anything of the nature of religion. No belief can ever hope to free the soul.  It is in emptiness that one can begin to know what is true and what is not.

Weekly Meditation #5

Establishment of a Peaceful and Harmonious World
Once the individual realizes the essential unity of existence, the correct means of effecting their inner-desire for compassion in the world becomes apparent. To create a peaceful and harmonious world for the benefit of all beings is their objective. This is the "building of the kingdom of God on earth" that the saints across time have spoken of and admonished humanity to work towards.

Art is the Highest Religion
Of all spiritual acts the most sacred would be engaging in artist pursuits. The act of creating art is the perfect human reflection of the Cosmic Mother's act of supreme creation. It is in this state that the individual reaches the highest level of human existence and achieves the highest yoga (union) with the Divine.

Weekly Meditation #4

Respect for All Spiritual Practices
When one has spiritual knowledge it becomes exceedingly clear that there is no division of humanity. All of humanity is as one soul in the divine view. Therefore, all spiritual practices must be understood as flowing from and returning to the same eternal source. If one wishes to live the spiritual life, respect and reverence must be given to all the truly spiritual pursuits of humanity.

Purpose of Spiritual Practice is Unity With the Cosmic Creator
It has always been the purpose of spiritual practice to bring us closer to the divine and throughout history many forms of prayer and meditation have been created. While outwardly these forms are different, inwardly their reality is one. All forms of spiritual practice lead the the individual to realizing that their existence is not an anomaly disconnected from the rest of existence, but rather that their inner essence is the one reality of the Cosmic Creator.
